When the United Nations announced the official theme for the 2026 International Day of Older Persons: “The Age of Longevity: Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives” ,the international community sent a clear message: humanity is not merely growing older, but entering an entirely new era of longevity. This is no longer a distant projection or a matter of managing demographic burdens, but a structural transformation that demands fundamental changes in how whole societies function.
As a pioneer in population ageing adaptation and the development of solutions for older persons in Viet Nam, VIOBA Social Enterprise finds profound alignment between this year’s UN theme and our overarching vision, mission, and ongoing strategic actions.
A Paradigm Shift: From "Lifespan" to "Healthspan" and the "Longevity Dividend"
A defining breakthrough in this year’s UN Concept Note lies in the clear distinction between chronological lifespan and healthy life expectancy (healthspan). Although global life expectancy has steadily increased over the past seven decades, the gap between life expectancy and healthy years of life reached 9.6 years in 2019 and continues to widen. Living longer is only truly meaningful when individuals sustain good health, functional ability, autonomy, and social connection.

Furthermore, the United Nations calls on the world to view ageing through the lens of a "longevity dividend". When older persons maintain their health and productive capacity, they serve as invaluable development assets for families and societies, rather than passive recipients of care.
However, the greatest current barrier is that most social protection frameworks, health systems, labour markets, and urban infrastructure were designed around the shorter lifespans of the past century. The age of longevity compels us to rethink and redesign these systems through a cross-cutting, age-inclusive approach that places human rights and dignity at the centre.
VIOBA and the Drive to Realise Global Commitments in Viet Nam
The strong resonance between the UNIDOP 2026 theme and VIOBA’s mission is clearly reflected across our core operational pillars aimed at building an active ageing ecosystem:
Closing the healthspan gap: Adopting a life-course approach to active ageing, VIOBA promotes early preparation for later life. Alongside our core focus on older persons, VIOBA’s comprehensive care solutions and services extend to middle-aged individuals, pre-retirees, and family caregiving networks. We pioneer interventions in brain health, cognitive training, and autonomy maintenance, empowering individuals to enhance their quality of life across life stages, extend healthy life expectancy, and ease long-term care pressures.
Empowerment through digital transformation and lifelong learning: To adapt to the digital age, VIOBA delivers digital literacy programs, training on artificial intelligence (AI) applications, smartphone use, and digital platforms for older and middle-aged adults. We believe that expanding lifelong learning opportunities enables older adults not only to navigate modern life with confidence, but also to have an active voice and continue contributing their knowledge to the community.
Building mutual support networks and advancing the Intergenerational Self-Help Club (ISHC) model: Rooted in community practice, VIOBA supports the replication and scaling of the ISHC model as a comprehensive and sustainable solution. This model holistically integrates healthcare, livelihoods and income generation, voice amplification, and rights protection, while enabling older persons to actively engage in socio-economic life. Intergenerational solidarity and grassroots mutual assistance empower older people to unlock their full potential and contribute tangibly to local development.
Fostering the Silver Economy: Anticipating population ageing trends, VIOBA provides advisory services and collaborates with businesses to develop an ecosystem of products and services tailored to older adults. In parallel with market advisory, we actively promote flexible employment opportunities and age-appropriate entrepreneurship, supporting older persons in maintaining financial independence and contributing to the economy.
Action for an Age-Inclusive Future
The age of longevity calls for coordinated action that extends beyond government alone, requiring genuine collaboration from the private sector, civil society organisations, academia, and older persons themselves.
In solidarity with the 2026 International Day of Older Persons, VIOBA leverages its role as a bridge and advisory partner to promote a "whole-of-government and whole-of-society" approach by closely connecting policymakers, the private sector, researchers, civil society, and older persons. Through continuous innovation, we strive to translate international policy frameworks into tangible improvements in the daily lives of older persons in Vietnam—where every stage of a longer life is lived in health, autonomy, dignity, and fulfilment.
