The The 37th Global Conference of Alzheimer’s Disease International, held in Lyon, France from 14–16 April 2026, brought together ADI’s senior leadership, including Ms. Paola Barbarino (CEO), Mr. Chris Lynch (Deputy CEO), and Ms. Meera Pattabiraman (Chair of the Board), along with leading experts, organizations, and policymakers in the field of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia from around the world.
A representative from VIOBA Social Enterprise participated in pre-conference activities, including the ADI Asia-Pacific Regional (APRO) Meeting, ADI University training sessions, and the ADI Council Meeting as an observer, as well as the main conference sessions.
The conference featured a wide range of insightful discussions, particularly on community-based care models and support for caregivers. The session“ Advancing models of care”, including the presentation “Reaching the unreached: a community-based service delivery model for dementia care in rural India”, provided valuable practical lessons on how to reach underserved populations through community networks—an approach highly relevant to the Vietnamese context. Other key topics matched VIOBA’s interest included changing perceptions, reducing stigma, and building dementia-inclusive societies; education, training, and empowerment of informal caregivers; supporting people living alone with dementia; and “caring for the carers” to ensure their well-being, support, and sustainability. “Tiếp cận những người chưa được tiếp cận: mô hình cung cấp dịch vụ dựa vào cộng đồng để chăm sóc bệnh nhân sa sút trí tuệ ở vùng nông thôn Ấn Độ” đã mang lại những bài học thực tiễn về cách tiếp cận các nhóm dễ bị bỏ sót thông qua mạng lưới cộng đồng – một hướng đi rất phù hợp với bối cảnh Việt Nam. Bên cạnh đó, các chủ đề như thay đổi nhận thức, giảm kỳ thị và xây dựng xã hội thân thiện với người sa sút trí tuệ; giáo dục, đào tạo và trao quyền cho người chăm sóc không chính thức; hỗ trợ người sống một mình với sa sút trí tuệ; và “chăm sóc người chăm sóc” nhằm đảm bảo sức khỏe, sự hỗ trợ và tính bền vững… cũng được VIOBA quan tâm.
In addition, discussions on the application of technology and AI in supporting caregivers, as well as insights from the WHO iSupport program, including the presentation on cross-cultural feasibility and acceptability by Professor Tuan Anh Nguyen (Global Brain Health Institute), offered useful evidence and experiences for potential adaptation in Viet Nam.
Through this conference, VIOBA has gained valuable insights into global trends and best practices, contributing to improved community-based care and support for older people living with dementia, strengthening caregiver networks, promoting dementia-friendly initiatives, and expanding international collaboration in the time ahead.
