A defining breakthrough in this year\u2019s UN Concept Note lies in the clear distinction between chronological lifespan and healthy life expectancy (healthspan)<\/em>. Although global life expectancy has steadily increased over the past seven decades, the gap between life expectancy and healthy years of life reached 9.6 years in 2019 and continues to widen. Living longer is only truly meaningful when individuals sustain good health, functional ability, autonomy, and social connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, the United Nations calls on the world to view ageing through the lens of a \"longevity dividend\". When older persons maintain their health and productive capacity, they serve as invaluable development assets for families and societies, rather than passive recipients of care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the greatest current barrier is that most social protection frameworks, health systems, labour markets, and urban infrastructure were designed around the shorter lifespans of the past century. The age of longevity compels us to rethink and redesign these systems through a cross-cutting, age-inclusive approach that places human rights and dignity at the centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
